Four Immersive Days of Work in the Guitar Circle. Guitar & Audience Craft

Techniques and Exercises for Audients and Guitarists.

The Guitar Circle welcomes players and audients of all ages and levels of experience, from absolute beginners to professionals.

The art of craft is universal. The artful craft of Guitar Craft is also specific.

Guitar Craft is a way of developing a relationship with guitar, music, and with ourselves. Guitar and Audience Craft techniques and exercises provide a foundation for taking the performance event to a higher level.

The Guitar Circle is a way of working which strengthens community. We also rock out!

An Invitation from Robert Fripp

I am very happy to invite you to our second Guitar Circle course at Glen Cove, Long Island, August 22-26th. 2022.

What struck me most powerfully in the King Crimson live performances, this past July-September in the US, was just that: the power. The members of KC are exceptional in terms of experience, capacity, and dedication to serving Music. But this was not the source of the power, as I experienced it. More like, KC was a finely-tuned instrument which enabled Music to enter those performance events; as if the Music so wished to be welcomed into those spaces: very close to giving itself away, providing we did just a little to help. Like, for Homeland Security to allow KC’s English players and Road Team to enter the US; for the venues to be open to the public; for audients to come out in public with Covid ripping out; for Hurricane Ida to pass…

That any of these shows were held at all, and whatever number of good people turned up, was already an achievement IMO.

Turn a seeming disadvantage to your advantage.
The greater the seeming disadvantage, the greater the possible advantage.

Lockdown impacted so many lives, often tragically. It also provided the opportunity to reflect upon, re-set, and re-boot our habitual assumptions, behaviour, and values. Wherever they seem to be out-of-tune for who, what, and where we are now, in this moment, then may we drop those assumptions, old attitudes and opinions, and act otherwise.

It’s very easy in the First World, with relative riches and material privilege, to take music for granted – I hand over my heard-earned pay! I have rights! I have no obligations! We so easily forget what Music is, what Music does and makes available; how it moves us, speaks to our feelings, gets our feet dancing; and brings us together as one in a performance – music, musicians, and audients, different types of people from all manner of backgrounds and places. For me, this a sacred event, one which I take seriously but never solemnly – strapping on, walking on, and rocking out!

The Introduction To The Guitar at Glen Cove this past August 2021 was held midway between the two legs of King Crimson’s US Tour. In its own particular way, it held the same power for me as the KC shows. I was anticipating a completion to my involvement in GC activities, and a completion to courses such as this. Instead, all things GC kicked off again, again. A completion is a new beginning, after all.

A novel element was the inclusion and participation of audients on the course. Alternatively expressed, auditor. The musician plays music for people, most of whom have little training in being present in a collected state; holding goodwill to the players, fellow audients, and the event; and listening. How to put aside all the fidgeting and twitching, noise and chatter in our heads, and be open to what is immediately available in the moment? The contribution of the audients was significant and a major part of the success of the course IMO.

Also, on past GC courses, we have been challenged to provide a role for partners of the guitar-interested participants. Fortunately, the facility of Glen Cove is ideal for partners to join us and attend the various classes and events, exercises and performances, to whatever degree they wish. For those not interested in picking up a guitar, the audient role is available.

For the next Guitar Circle at Glen Cove, I am hoping audients will arrive in great number and perhaps even crowd out the guitarists.

No interest in playing guitar? Great!

Ears? Even better.

Innocent ears? Audients are most welcome to join the guitarists, strap on their ears, and rock out!

During Robert Fripp’s Introduction to the Guitar Circle, nothing is compulsory but some things are necessary. Robert feels strongly that alcohol and drug use are incompatible with this work and are strongly discouraged. Hey, the anticipated polyrhythms* alone are enough to deter anyone from even thinking about drinking! So, any participant who partakes in drugs or alcohol during the event may be asked to forego participating in our activities. Thank you for your cooperation.

*Polyrhythms: The simultaneous combination of contrasting rhythms in a musical composition. Rhythmic conflicts, or cross-rhythms, may occur within a single metre (e.g., two eighth notes against triplet eighths or worse!) and may even be reinforced by simultaneous combinations of conflicting metres. You will happily experience some of these during Robert’s event!
